Treatment of deformed fingers in children in Malaga

Clinodactyly is a condition that refers to crooked toes in children’s feet. This deviation can be to the right or left and is a frequent concern for parents in the pediatric podiatry consultation, although it is generally not a cause for alarm for podiatrists.

What should I do if my child has deformed toes?

The good news is that in 99% of cases, clinodactyly resolves spontaneously without the need for treatment. As the child grows and the foot widens, the toes usually return to their correct position.

In most cases, clinodactyly is painless. Only in cases of severe deformity may there be discomfort from rubbing. The deviation may be above (supradductus) or below (infradductus) the adjacent toe.

At Clínica Poyatos we have been helping people from Malaga to take care of their feet for over 60 years. Make an appointment and we will assess the condition of your child’s feet.

Why are my child’s fingers deformed?

There are several reasons why this condition may occur:

  • Heredity: This is the most common cause. If parents have crooked fingers, the child is likely to inherit them.
  • Chromosomal disorders: Such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome or Klinefelter syndrome.
  • Associated pathologies: It may occur together with syndactyly (union of fingers) or polydactyly (extra fingers).
  • Acquired causes: For example, poorly healed fractures or wearing very narrow shoes.

Ask for a first appointment.

It is important to be assessed by a specialist podiatrist. At Clínica Poyatos we have been treating pathologies such as deformed toes in children in Malaga for over 60 years.

How to treat clinodactyly?

At Clínica Poyatos, as a leader in pediatric podiatry in Malaga, we will carry out an assessment and diagnosis of your child’s deformed toes.

It is important to remember that surgery should not be performed for cosmetic reasons, especially in children, as growth usually corrects the condition on its own. Clinodactyly is a common condition in children that usually requires no treatment and resolves with growth.

Parents can rest easy knowing that, in most cases, time is the best ally in correcting this deviation of the fingers.

Treatment in severe cases

In more severe or uncomfortable cases, the following options may be considered:

Silicone separators: Useful in severe or painful cases, but do not cure the condition

Surgery: This is only considered in very severe cases with pain, preferably near the end of growth. In children, soft tissue techniques are chosen to avoid damaging the growth cartilage.
