What should I do if I have bunions on my feet?

Bunion surgery is recommended when the pain is persistent and limits your daily activities and you have already tried conservative treatments (such as custom insoles or special footwear) and they have not been effective or the deformity of your foot is becoming moderate.

Why do bunions appear?

Hereditary factors

Genetics: Genetic predisposition is one of the main causes of bunions. If several members of a family have bunions on their feet, it is likely that others will develop them as well.

Physical conditions of the foot

Structural abnormalities: People with flat feet, overly long big toes, or muscle imbalances are more likely to develop bunions.

Congenital deformities: Some people are born with abnormal alignment of the bones in their feet, which increases the risk of bunions.

External factors

Improper footwear: Wearing shoes with narrow toes and high heels puts pressure on the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, which can lead to the formation of bunions. This type of footwear is one of the reasons why bunions are more common in women.

Repetitive activities: Activities that put constant pressure on the feet, such as running or standing for long periods, can also contribute to bunions.

Ask without obligation, there is currently the possibility of performing techniques with fabulous aesthetic and functional results for the foot. Not only improving the aesthetics of the foot, but also its movement and pain. Evaluate your case, we have the solution.

In severe cases or when non-surgical methods are not effective, surgery may be necessary to realign the toe and remove the bony protrusion. Make an appointment at our clinic, our specialized podiatrists will assess your case and tell you the most effective solution to treat or operate on bunions.

Some of the symptoms of having bunions are:

  • Bony protuberance: A visible bump on the lateral side of the big toe.
  • Pain and tenderness: Pain in the affected joint, especially when wearing shoes.
  • Redness and calluses: Red skin and calluses in the bunion area.
  • Big toe deviation: The big toe leans toward the other toes, sometimes overlapping the second toe.

Importance of Footprint Study.

Foot deformities often arise from changes in the way the foot supports and distributes the load when walking. To ensure effective and long-lasting correction, it is essential to analyze these movements and correct them through surgery when necessary.

A detailed gait study is key to identifying the exact cause of the deformity, making an accurate diagnosis and applying the appropriate treatment. Only in this way can we ensure that the surgery provides definitive results, preventing the deformity from reappearing over time.
