Treatment of flat feet in children in Malaga

Flat feet, also known as flexible valgus flat feet, is a common condition in children, characterized by the lack of an arch in the sole of the foot when they are standing. In other words, the foot appears to be completely flat on the ground and seemingly turned inwards. This condition is normal in childhood up to 7 years of age, as their arches are not fully developed and the tissues of the foot are more flexible. At Clínica Poyatos we can help you offer an effective diagnosis and treatment.

Are flat feet a cause for concern in children?

The development of the arch of the foot usually occurs between 2 and 5 years of age, although in some children it may take a little longer. Most children outgrow this condition without treatment. However, there are situations in which parents should be alert and consider consulting a podiatrist.

When should parents be concerned if their child has flat feet?

Pain and discomfort: If your child complains of pain in the feet, ankles or legs, especially after physical activities, it is a sign that there may be an underlying problem that requires attention.

Difficulty walking or running: If your child has an awkward gait, tires easily, or has difficulty running and playing like other children his or her age, this could be a sign that flat feet are affecting his or her mobility.

Abnormal shoe wear: Looking at the wear pattern on your child’s shoes can be revealing. Excessive wear on the inside of the shoe can indicate overpronation, which is common in flat feet.

Stiff foot: If your child’s foot seems stiff and he or she can’t move it properly, or if the arch doesn’t form when he or she lifts his or her toes while standing, it could be a sign of rigid flatfoot, a more serious condition than flexible flatfoot.

It is important to be assessed by a specialist podiatrist. At Clínica Poyatos we have been treating conditions such as flat feet in children or pronated feet in Malaga for over 60 years.

Treatment of flat feet in children

If your child is between 2 and 7 years old, he or she may not need any type of treatment, as flat feet can be part of development and growth. It will always depend on the degree of deformity, which the podiatrist in Malaga will assess on the day of the consultation.

In the event that flat feet cause pain, treatment with custom insoles would be necessary, which should be prescribed by our pediatric podiatrist. This would help reduce discomfort and pain, as well as improve walking.
