Metatarsalgia treatment in Malaga

Metatarsalgia is not a disease per se, but rather a symptom that refers to pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot, specifically at the base of the metatarsal bones that connect to the toes. This area, commonly known as the “ball” of the foot, is where many people experience discomfort when walking, running, or standing for long periods.

How do I know if I have metatarsalgia?

The main symptom of metatarsalgia is pain in the ball of the foot. Many people describe this feeling as if they have a rock in their shoe. The pain may be worse when doing activities that involve putting weight on the affected area, such as walking, running or jumping.

At Clínica Poyatos we have been helping people from Malaga to take care of their feet for over 60 years. Make an appointment and we will assess the pain you suffer in the “pad” of the sole of your foot.

How is it diagnosed?

Our podiatrists perform a biomechanical study, which may include X-rays and, in some cases, an MRI, to determine the exact cause of the pain.

Ask for a first appointment.

It is important to be assessed by a specialist podiatrist. At Clínica Poyatos we have been treating pathologies such as metatarsalgia in Malaga for over 60 years.

What is the treatment?

At Poyatos Clinic, as a leading provider of biomechanics in Malaga, we will carry out an accurate assessment and diagnosis of your feet. It is important to note that the treatment of metatarsalgia is personalized according to the age of the patient, their sporting or work activity, and the severity of the condition. At our clinic, our podiatrists in Malaga will evaluate each case individually to determine the most appropriate approach.

The first option is usually conservative treatment, such as the use of custom insoles. These can relieve or eliminate pain within 15 days to 1 month. In addition, specific exercises, ice application, and oral medication may be recommended to relieve pain and inflammation.

What happens if conservative treatment does not work?

If conservative treatment is not effective or the metatarsalgia is very severe, surgery may be considered.

This option includes:

  • Osteotomies (cuts in the bone) to relieve excessive pressure on the metatarsal heads.
  • The most common techniques are Weil or triple Weil type osteotomies.
  • The surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, with local anesthesia.
