How does Genu valgum occur?

The most common causes of knocked knees are childhood obesity, trauma or hereditary causes. The sooner this dysfunction is treated, the better, as the deformity or pain may increase, as well as the ligaments of the knee may suffer.

It is worth mentioning that in children up to 5 years of age it is common to have this X-shaped knee deformity up to 15 degrees, which is usually minimized to the point of being less than 8 cm apart when they reach approximately 7 years of age.

If this deformity persists past childhood, we encounter a biomechanical problem that must be treated to prevent further wear.

Our body is designed so that each knee supports half of the body weight, when there are asymmetries, wear and tear and injuries can arise in the external meniscus and in the lateral cartilage of the femur, for example.

It is important to be assessed by a specialist podiatrist. At Clínica Poyatos we have been treating pathologies such as genu valgum or genu varum in Malaga for over 60 years.

Treatment of knock-knees

If your child is between 2 and 7 years old, he or she may not need any type of treatment, as knock knees may be part of growth. As recommendations, we can establish guidelines to avoid childhood obesity and good posture that minimizes the risk of developing genu valgum.

As podiatrists in Malaga, we believe that treatment for knock-knees should be etiological if possible, that is, we must treat the cause or trigger of knock-knees. Each case is studied individually to find effective solutions.

Surgical treatment is indicated in cases of severe and progressive genu valgum in patients over 7 years of age.
