What is lumbago and sciatica?

Lumbago, also known as lower back pain, refers to pain located in the lower back. It can be acute, appearing suddenly, or chronic, persisting for more than three months.

Unlike lower back pain, sciatica is a specific type of pain that originates in the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in the body and runs from the lower back to the legs. Sciatica occurs when there is compression or irritation of this nerve.

What can cause low back pain?

Lower back pain or lumbago can be caused by:

  • Muscle or ligament injuries: Excessive strain, incorrect lifting of heavy objects or sudden movements.
  • Structural problems: Herniated discs, osteoarthritis or spinal stenosis.
  • Bad posture: Incorrect postures maintained for long periods, both standing and sitting.
  • Degenerative factors: Natural wear and tear of the joints and intervertebral discs with age.

How do I know if I have low back pain?

If you suffer from these symptoms, you probably suffer from low back pain:

  • Constant or intermittent pain in the lower back.
  • Stiffness and difficulty moving.
  • Pain that may radiate to the buttocks or legs in cases of nerve involvement.

What can cause sciatica?

Irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve can be caused by:

Herniated disc: Displacement of an intervertebral disc that presses on the sciatic nerve.

  • Spinal stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses the nerve.
  • Bone spurs: Bony growths that can put pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  • Piriformis syndrome: The piriformis muscle can irritate or compress the sciatic nerve.

How do I know if I have sciatica?

If you experience these symptoms, you probably have irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve.

  • Sharp or burning pain that radiates from the lower back down one leg.
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected leg.
  • Pain that worsens when sitting, coughing, or sneezing.
